On 26 May 2025, Professor Robert Grzeszczak, Head of the Chair of Transnational Law at the University of Warsaw, had the honour of moderating the opening panel of European Competition Day 2025, titled „Directions for the New EU Competition Policy: Perspectives for the New Commission”.
The discussion brought together leading figures in European competition policy:
– Inge Bernaerts, Director for Policy and Strategy, DG COMP, European Commission

– Mario Monti, Senator of the Italian Republic, former Prime Minister of Italy and former EU Commissioner for Competition
Professor Grzeszczak opened the panel by highlighting the evolving role of competition policy as a strategic tool in an increasingly competitive global landscape. Drawing on the recent Draghi Report and the European Commission’s Competitiveness Compass, the panel explored how EU competition policy must now integrate more closely with industrial and trade policy to meet the challenges of the digital and green transitions.
Key themes included:
-How to reconcile strong internal competition with the need for global champions
-The implications of incorporating innovation, resilience, and sustainability into competition enforcement
-The growing politicisation of transatlantic trade relations and their impact on EU competition law
-The importance of faster and more predictable enforcement mechanisms
-The role of competition enforcers in supporting broader strategic goals of the Union
This timely and thought-provoking discussion underscored the need for a forward-looking, dynamic and coherent EU competition policy, capable of safeguarding the Single Market while ensuring Europe’s strategic autonomy and global competitiveness.
The Chair of Transnational Law is proud to actively contribute to these key debates shaping the future of the European Union.
